What We Do

Through volunteer tutors we provide homework help as well as academic enrichment to students in first through fourth grades. The academic program runs Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Our goal each day is to complete the homework assigned to the students, followed by reading.  We emphasize a proper understanding of the homework assigned by the teachers, not simply the completion of it.

We practice math facts requiring the use of basic addition, subtraction and multiplication.  A healthy selection of fiction and nonfiction focused guided reading books are available to encourage students to read about various topics in an effort to enlarge their understanding of the world.

Our Wednesday enrichment activity is from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.  We focus on art, music, scripture, hands-on science, social studies, literacy and cultural awareness to broaden the educational experience of the children.

Parent Education

We provide parent education through Focus on the Family’s research-based, 13-week “Raising Highly Capable Kids” curriculum.  The program strengthens parents in their roles at home and in the community.  It gives them a safe place to learn techniques in addressing a variety of parenting issues, as well as equipping them with knowledge about how to best guide their children toward success in their overall development.  The content of the curriculum, the sharing of experiences and problem solving strategies are invaluable to our parent participants.
